Learning Through the Arts
in an Island Setting

Courses run Sunday afternoon through Thursday morning with a balance of instructional and relaxation time. CEUs are available for art educators.

Painting from the Landscape of Stout’s Island

June 13–17
$180 Course Fee
Registration open to adults and accompanying teens

Enjoy the natural wonders of Stout’s Island as you create a painting on location. You will learn how to capture your observations as you study color, light, and atmosphere. Val Jenkins, CVA’s Fine Arts Chair, will cover basic elements of painting, including color mixing, composition, and technique. You’ll learn to translate what you see to the canvas. Create dynamic compositions through quick studies and capture the landscape in a sustained painting, whether your view is panoramic, close-up, or in-between. Beginning or advanced levels are welcome. You may work in either oil or acrylic. A supply list will be provided.

Expedition to Stout’s Island: Nature Journals for teachers, artists, and those who care about the environment

June 13–17
$180 Course Fee
Registration open to adults only

How can we see and understand our connection to nature? By slowing down, observing, writing, and reflecting on nature we come closer to understanding our interdependence to the natural world and how strong, yet fragile, these connections are. Using the historic artforms of the nature journal, field notes, and writing, you will reconnect with nature in the remote wooded setting of Stout’s Island. You will be guided in your drawing and scientific journaling methods by educator and scientist Char Ellingson and artist and CVA faculty member Lynda Monick- Isenberg. A perfect respite in a perfect setting. A supply list will be provided.

Capture Stout’s Island Through the Lens of a Digital Camera

June 20–24

This is your chance to learn about digital photography while exploring the beauty of Stout’s Island. You will discuss ideas and techniques to make your photos stronger and more interesting. Take the opportunity to immediately use what you are learning as you explore Stout’s Island with your camera. There will also be photo-based readings, lectures, discussions, and critiques. CVA faculty member Steve Stenzel will touch on the use of Photoshop, but previous experience is not required. Laptops may be helpful, but are not required. Participants are asked to bring their own digital cameras.

Handmade Children’s Story of Stout’s Island

June 27–July 1

Make your own accordion-fold storybook. Your book will be a picture story, a narrative visual journal inspired by your visit to Stout’s Island.
